Tempo & Tune is a metronome and tuner in one small app: a metronome with tap tempo that keeps strict time, and a chromatic tuner that shows how close you are to the note on guitar, bass, ukulele or violin.
Open it, set the beat or tune a string, and get on with practice.
Metronome
- 20 to 300 BPM, set with big plus and minus buttons, a slider or tap tempo (it ignores a missed or doubled tap)
- The tempo name is shown next to the number, from Grave to Prestissimo
- Time signatures 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8, with beat 1 accented and the groups of three accented in 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8
- Eighths, triplets or sixteenths between the beats
- Three click sounds: wood block, soft beep and clave, each with a brighter accent click
- A beat indicator that follows the click, and an optional vibration on each beat
- Tempo trainer: the metronome speeds up by a few BPM every few bars until you reach your target tempo
- Presets: save a tempo, signature and subdivision under a name and open it from the home screen
- Practice timer: the app counts the time the click runs and keeps a simple log of your sessions by day
The click track is built as audio and looped by the phone's media player, not fired by software timers, which keeps the spacing between clicks even.
Tuner
- Chromatic tuner: shows the nearest note, the octave, the cents off (with a green zone for within 5 cents) and the frequency in hertz
- Guitar, bass, ukulele and violin modes show the open strings and highlight the one nearest to what you play; tap a string to tune to it
- Custom mode: your own list of strings, for seven-string guitars, alternate tunings or other instruments
- Play a reference tone for the selected string through the speaker
- Reference pitch from 415 to 466 Hz (440 by default), and sharp or flat note names
The tuner listens only while its screen is open and turns the sound into a pitch on the phone. Nothing is recorded or saved.
Good to know
- The metronome plays while the app is open and keeps the screen on; it pauses when you switch apps, when a call or another app takes over the sound, or when headphones are unplugged
- Metronome and tuner both work without an internet connection (ads need one)
- Light and dark themes
Tempo & Tune is free and contains ads: a banner on the home screen and an occasional full-screen ad when you open the next tool after using one. There are no ads on the metronome or tuner screens and no videos to watch.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a metronome and tuner in one app that works offline?
Tempo & Tune combines a metronome and a chromatic tuner in one Android app, and both work without internet. The metronome runs from 20 to 300 BPM, and the tuner has guitar, bass, ukulele, violin and custom modes.
How can I tune a ukulele or violin with my phone?
Tempo & Tune's tuner shows the open strings for ukulele, violin, guitar or bass and highlights the nearest one as you play. It shows the cents off, with a green zone within 5 cents, and can play a reference tone for each string.
Is there a metronome that slowly speeds up while I practise?
Tempo & Tune has a tempo trainer that raises the tempo by a few BPM every few bars until it reaches your target. You set the step, the number of bars and the target tempo.
Is Tempo & Tune free?
Yes, Tempo & Tune is free and contains ads: a banner on the home screen and an occasional full-screen ad when you open the next tool after using one. There are no in-app purchases and no ads on the metronome or tuner screens.
Does the Tempo & Tune metronome keep playing in the background?
No. Tempo & Tune's metronome plays while the app is open and keeps the screen on. It pauses when you switch apps, when a call or another app takes over the sound, or when headphones are unplugged.
How is Tempo & Tune different from other metronome apps?
Tempo & Tune builds the click track as audio that the phone's media player loops, rather than firing each click from a timer. It also includes tap tempo, a tempo trainer, presets, a practice log and a full tuner.
Does Tempo & Tune record me through the microphone?
No. Tempo & Tune uses the microphone only while the tuner screen is open and turns the sound into a pitch on the phone; nothing is recorded or saved. Only the Google AdMob SDK collects data for ads.
